Meet the Artist

Kayla Borell-Mullins is a multi-hyphenate artist based in Kansas. As a full-time artist, she explores many different art mediums in the 2D and 3D realms, such as painting, paper quilling, crocheting, cross-stitching, ceramics, printmaking, jewelry making, and more. By constantly making and learning, she is well-rounded and skilled in many disciplines as an arts educator.

Borell’s practice involves the exploration and experimentation of techniques and materials. After formal art training, she enjoys daily rule-breaking and trial and error while making. Her artistic inspiration comes from repetition, words, plants & nature, emotional states of being, memory, place in life, and the catharsis of art making.

Artist Biography

Kayla Borell attended Bethany College (2019) earned her Bacholer’s of Art in Studio Art: Painting & Ceramics and Visual Art Administration. She received her Master’s in Arts Leadership and Management (2022) from Wichita State University.

Born and raised on a farm and ranch in Western Kansas. Being a farmer’s daughter, Borell’s artistic inspiration comes from appreciating the land and nature around her. Art was always an escape for her. A way to truly express herself when the worries became too much and the words too hard. Words have always been hard - paint coating the surface seemed to help ease those thoughts or feelings. A catharsis. A way to purge the emotions she wishes to voice or understand through another language or escape. Borell has always been an emotional person, and she didn’t know what to do with it until she turned to creating which became a way of life. Now she uses that idea in her creative process to understand different ways to look at life through personal experiences, memories, and places in life.
